Is nitrous oxide safe?
Nitrous oxide is an extremely safe way to make sure children and adults are comfortable during dental procedures. Nitrous oxide has been used in dental procedures for 100 years! Nitrous oxide or “laughing gas” is a mild sedative that has no odor and when used in combination with oxygen does not disrupt normal breathing. Nitrous oxide does not “knock you out”. You are still in control and are able to communicate. Nitrous oxide is completely reversible too! That means if a patient does not like the effects or we need to stop the procedure for any reason we simply let them breathe oxygen and everything feels back to normal. Because nitrous oxide is so safe and easy to use we can even use it for simple cleanings! This is a great tool for people who have had a negative experience at the dentist’s in the past or are very anxious.
