Children's Dentistry

Families have been receiving outstanding dental care at our Winston-Salem location for more than fifty years. Patients who visited us as children now trust their own children to a family practice that provides gentle, compassionate care. We are honored to have earned that kind of loyalty.

We recognize that the early years are a critical time in your child’s development. During these years, the stage will be set for your child’s dental future.

What kind of habits will they develop?

Will they be scared of the dentist or will they consider the dentist a trusted part of their health care team?

We’ll help get your child started off on the right foot for a happy, healthy smile that lasts a lifetime.

Your Child’s First Dental Appointment

We typically see children for their first visit at about age 3. This is a good time to start because all the baby teeth are probably in, and we’ll be able to get a clear picture of how your child’s dental development is proceeding. Plus, at this age, your child will have a high level of curiosity as well as the capacity to follow instructions and sit still for the necessary period of time.

The American Dental Association recommends dental visits begin around age 1. We’re happy to see your child before age 3, but each child responds differently to dental visits.  If we think it’s beneficial, we’ll be happy to refer you to a pediatric dentist so your younger child gets exactly the care they need.

Since we know how important these first few visits are for building trust, we’ll take it slow and let your child guide us. At your child’s first “happy visits,” they’ll be able to watch us take care of mom and dad, they’ll get to play with the water and the light, and they'll go for a ride in the dentist’s chair. How exciting!

After two or three visits like that, most kids have enough confidence to let us take a closer look so we can count teeth – and maybe provide a first cleaning! If it takes a little longer, that’s okay, too. We’ve seen plenty of kids over the years, so we know how to follow your child’s cues.
