Root Canals

Many people have the perception that root canal treatment is one of life’s most uncomfortable experiences.

We can assure you that this perception is simply not true.

Root canals don’t cause pain – they relieve it. Understanding the facts about root canals will help reduce your anxiety as you anticipate your procedure.

What Is a Root Canal?

Root canals are an important treatment that addresses a serious problem involving the pulp of a tooth that has become infected. The pulp is a system of blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues inside the tooth that helps the tooth maintain its vitality.

There are a number of reasons why you may develop an infected root canal: gum disease, tooth decay, complex dental problems, or traumatic tooth damage. If the pulp is severely damaged, we must perform a root canal to completely remove it, then fill and seal the canals to save the tooth.

Do Root Canals Hurt?

The biggest misconception about root canals is that treatment is painful. It just isn’t so. In fact, in the great majority of cases, having a root canal is no more uncomfortable than having a cavity filled.

The sensation of pain is related to the infected root canal, not the procedure itself. The truth is that the procedure brings immediate relief to the intense pain that can result from an infected root canal.

The outer enamel surface of your tooth has no nerves, so it can’t really “feel” any sensations. But deep inside of the tooth lies a bundle of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue called the pulp. Sometimes, a crack that has developed in the tooth – or even a particularly deep cavity – allows bacteria to infect this soft tissue. That’s when you experience the sensation of pain.
